The Digital Accessibility course, developed in partnership with Hedron — Digital Strategy & Design, aims to help build a solid foundation of digital accessibility skills, fostering an accessible-by-design approach to design and development.

The training plan is organised into three live remote modules, designed to meet the specific needs of designers and developers.

 Introduction to Accessibility — Regulations and guidelines · about 2 hours
An introduction to understanding the fundamental principles of accessibility and the social impact of an inclusive product, with a closer look at regulations and guidelines.

  • Definition of Accessibility
  • Introduction to types of disability
  • The concept of “semantics”
  • Accessible content: what it means
  • Accessibility laws and regulations: overview
  • The EN 301 549 technical standard
  • WCAG 2.x and their application
  • An introduction to document accessibility

 Design and Accessibility — Accessible design · 6 hours
A closer look at the accessibility criteria to consider during the design phase, with practical examples and useful tools for integrating accessibility into the design system and everyday workflows.

  • Why does Accessibility start with Design?
  • The concept of Accessibility by Design
  • WCAG 2.x vs Nielsen’s Heuristics: can Accessibility, Usability and UX coexist?
  • HTML, WAI-ARIA and accessibility standards (an introduction, explored further in the development module)
  • Standards vs. De Facto Standards
  • Common interaction patterns that become barriers
  • Forms, states, microcopy and inclusive language
  • Cognitive load and Accessibility

 Development and Accessibility — Technical implementation and testing · 8 hours
A focus on the technical aspects of accessibility, with practical guidance on how to implement accessible code (web and mobile) and use the most effective testing tools.

HTML and CSS: accessibility standards

  • Semantic HTML (structure, landmarks, headings)
  • The DOM and the Accessibility tree
  • Keyboard interaction (tab order and focus management)

WAI-ARIA, dynamic states and complex behaviours

  • Roles, states and properties
  • The ARIA rules
  • Managing dynamic states with JavaScript
  • Complex non-standard components: modals (with reference to WAI-ARIA APG patterns)
  • Implementing accessible forms

Real-world errors, mobile and testing

  • Development anti-patterns (double-track development, cargo cult programming and vibe-coding)
  • Accessible mobile development (differences and overlaps with Desktop)
  • A closer look at screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack)
  • Common errors on Desktop and Mobile
  • Automated and manual testing

Tutoring included

The course includes 1 hour of dedicated tutoring with our instructors and Accessibility Experts, to support participants in resolving real-world issues and challenges.

A certificate of attendance is issued at the end of the course.
