Description
The UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers (2024) is the first global framework of artificial intelligence competences designed for teachers. It starts from a concrete change: with AI, the teacher-student relationship becomes a teacher-AI-student dynamic, and the framework defines the knowledge, skills, and values teachers need to master in order to navigate it.
The framework gives teachers three roles: designers and facilitators of learning with AI, guardians of safe and ethical practice, and models of lifelong learning about AI. The AI for Teachers certification attests to the level of competence reached across 5 dimensions and 3 progression levels.
The AI for Teachers framework identifies 5 dimensions of competence:
- 1Ā Human-centred mindset: AI is human-led; protecting human agency and autonomy in education
- 2Ā Ethics of AI: ethical principles, regulations, inclusion, and human rights in human-AI interaction
- 3Ā AI foundations and applications: core concepts, technology categories, and practical use of validated tools
- 4Ā AI pedagogy: designing and facilitating learning with AI, assessment, and managing a classroom where AI is present
- 5Ā AI for professional development: using AI for ongoing learning, data analysis, and communities of practice
The exam is a single test of 45 questions with closed-ended answers (4 options, only one correct), to be completed in 45 minutes and proctored. Questions are presented in three blocks, one for each progression level. The passing threshold is 25% correct answers, calculated globally across all questions.
- āĀ First block, Acquire: basic knowledge and skills to understand AI critically and use it responsibly in teaching
- āĀ Second block, Deepen: contextual application of competences to one’s own teaching practice, subject area, and school community
- āĀ Third block, Create: transformative use of AI, guiding colleagues, and contributing to school policy
- āĀ Based on UNESCO’s first global framework of AI competences for teachers (2024)
- āĀ Keeps the teacher at the center: AI amplifies, not replaces, the teacher’s agency, and human oversight stays central in pedagogical decisions
- āĀ Covers ethics, data protection, and the relevant regulations (AI Act, GDPR) in the school context
- āĀ Strengthens the professional profile of teachers at every school level
Who it is for: teachers at every school level, both in service and in initial training.
